An income tax refund occurs when you've paid more tax than your actual liability, either through TDS/TCS or advance tax payments. The excess amount is refunded by the income tax department after processing the income tax return.

 

Checking Income Tax Refund Status Online

The Income Tax Department of India provides an online platform for taxpayers to check the status of their income tax refund. Here are two different ways to check the income tax refund status online:

1. Income Tax E-filing Portal

Steps to Check Refund Status:

Step 1: Visit the official e-Filing portal (www.incometax.gov.in)

Step 2: Go To “Quick Links” and select “Know Your Refund Status”.

Step 3: Write PAN, select Assessment Year from the drop down menu and provide mobile number for OTP verification.  

Step 4: Enter the OTP received on the Mobile Number and select Proceed.

Step 5: The status of your income tax refund will be displayed with details like Assessment Year, Status, Reason for Refund Failure, and Payment Mode.

2. TIN NSDL Portal

Steps to Check Refund Status:

Step 1: Visit the TIN NSDL official website.

Step 2: Enter the 'PAN', 'Assessment Year', and 'Captcha'.

Step 3: Click on 'Proceed' to check the status of the refund.

 

Requesting Tax Refund Reissue

If needed, taxpayers can request a refund reissue if refund was not issued as the bank account was not pre-validated on the tax portal. Here are the steps:

  1. Log in to the official e-Filing portal.
  2. Go to 'My Account' and click on 'Services’.
  3. Select 'Refund Reissue' under 'Request Category.'
  4. Click on “Create Refund Reissue Request”
  5. Choose the financial year for the refund and provide reasons for refund re-issue.
  6. Ensure that your PAN linked bank account has been duly validated on the tax portal.
  7. The amount will be refunded to your bank account after processing.
 

FAQs on Income Tax Refund Status

Q1: Will there be compensation for delayed income tax refunds?

A1: Yes, delayed refunds accrue interest at 0.5% per month/part of the month from April 1 to the refund date, subject to certain conditions.  Note: In case the reasons for delay in issuance of refund is attributable to the assesses, then interest is not provided for such period of delay.  

Q2: When am I eligible for an income tax refund?

A2: You're eligible if you've paid more tax than your actual liability. Refund eligibility is calculated during ITR filing.

Q3: What's the time limit for claiming an income tax refund?

A3: The refund is to be claimed by filing the ITR form.
