What is Positive Pay?
Positive Pay is a system introduced as per RBI guidelines (effective 1 January 2021) to enhance cheque security and prevent fraudulent encashment due to forged or altered cheques.
After issuing a cheque, the customer are required to (for applicable cheques) share details such as cheque number, date, payee name, account number, account on which the cheque is drawn and amount with the bank by submitting a Positive Pay details.
How does the Positive Pay work?
When a cheque is presented for payment, the bank verifies its details against the information submitted through Positive Pay. If the details match, the cheque is honoured or passed; otherwise, it is returned if the positive pay details are not available or incorrect.
What are the benefits of Positive Pay?
Positive Pay strengthens cheque payment security by reducing the risk of fraud caused by tampering or forgery. It acts as a verification mechanism to help verify that cheque details match and are authentic before payment is processed.
Why should I use Positive Pay?
Positive Pay helps protect against cheque alteration and fraud. Additionally, only Positive Pay compliant cheques will be accepted under dispute resolution mechanism of RBI. Therefore, it is recommended to submit Positive Pay before cheque issuance.

It will be applicable to all AU account holders like Sole Prop, Individual, NRI, Company, Partnership, government entities and to all account types where cheque books have been issued – Saving, Current and OD.

No, the Positive Pay service is free for all AU customers.
What are the Positive Pay submission timings?
Positive Pay can be submitted digitally 24x7, but it should preferably be submitted at the time of issuance of the cheque and must always be submitted prior to its presentation.
Are Positive Pay details updated immediately?
Yes, the details are recorded in the system in real time.
What if there is a mismatch in details?
If cheque details do not match, the bank will return the cheque.
Will I receive confirmation after submission of Positive Pay?
Yes, you will receive an SMS confirmation on your registered mobile number.
Is Positive Pay required for transfers to my own account in another bank?
Yes, it is recommended to submit Positive Pay for all cheques, including those used for transfers to your own accounts in other banks.
What are the charges if a cheque is returned due to Positive Pay details not being submitted?
If cheque details do not match, the bank will return the cheque. This is applicable even if the cheque is below the threshold of ₹10 Lakhs.
What is the process to change or update Positive Pay details once submitted?
Once Positive Pay details are submitted; modification is not permitted through customer channels. Customers are advised to ensure correctness before submission.
What will happen if different Positive Pay details are submitted multiple times for the same cheque?
In such cases, only the first successfully registered Positive Pay entry will be considered valid. Any subsequent submissions for the same cheque number will be rejected by the system.
In case a cheque is issued from a joint account, is it mandatory for all joint holders (as per MOP) to update the Positive Pay details?
Positive Pay submission is an account-level activity and is not required to be performed by all joint account holders individually. The requirement is independent of the Mode of Operation (MOP).
In case a cheque is issued from a joint account, can any joint holder update the Positive Pay details?
Yes, any joint account holder who has access to the applicable banking channel (such as Net Banking or Mobile Banking) can update the Positive Pay details for the cheque.
