Table of contents

Monsoons not only bring respite from the scorching heat but also brings along with it some infections. Seniors are more susceptible to these infections, and therefore it is vital for them to boost their immune system.

To ensure you enjoy a healthy monsoon season, we have listed down some Do’s and Don’ts of monsoon care:

Do’s

  • Follow a healthy diet plan. Wash fruits and vegetables with clean water before consuming and add Indian herbs to your diet to boost your immunity.
  • Drink boiled water frequently.
  • Take warm showers daily and make certain that you clean your hands and feet regularly.
  • Seal your windows with nets and use mosquito repellents whenever needed.
  • Repair damaged roofs, cracked walls, old pipes, and clogged-up drains before the rain gods decide to go descend on your city!
  • To avoid falls, make sure you always carry a walking aid like a walking stick or a cane.
  • For your daily exercise routine try simple stretches, sit-ups, yoga, etc. at home.
  • Wear loose, dry clothes, preferably cotton clothes since they dry quickly.
  • Buy yourself proper footwear, rain-jacket, raincoat, umbrella, etc. and stock up some extra towels and warm blankets.
  • Consult your doctor immediately if you are suffering from fever to avoid further complications.
  • If you are taking prescription medication - keep a check on your stock and refill them as soon as possible. In addition to that, also keep a first aid kit handy, just in case there’s a minor accident.

Don’ts

  • Avoid eating street foods, since they are prepared in unhygienic conditions. Stick to hot, home-prepared food to stay healthy. Fried food items are a big no!
  • Check for breeding sites for Aedes mosquitoes (any container with stagnant water) at home. Get rid of it, if you find any.
  • Ensure your neighborhood is as clean as possible.
  • Avoid close contact with people who have cold, cough or flu.
  • Do not walk barefoot and do not wear wet shoes, especially if you are a diabetic, as it might increase the chances of infection.
  • Do not ignore any type of warts or minor infections. Consult a doctor as soon as possible.
  • Avoid going to salons for foot spas like fish treatment; we do not know which water they use.
  • Do not tie or comb your hair when wet.
  • Don't go unprepared for any vacation; always do your homework.
  • Finally, avoid taking too much stress. Taking a lot of stress can lead to skin woes like acne, wrinkles etc.

The current environment is infectious and unhealthy. However, you have to deal with the situation and equip yourselves with the best, to stay happy and healthy. And with the above list of dos and don'ts, you can get through the monsoons very easily.

Finally, always keep in mind that ‘Prevention is always better than cure’.
