Protect Yourself from Fraud of Fake Job Offer Scams

Job scams are attempts by scammers, pretending as officials of reputable companies to defraud gullible individuals in pretext of providing high-income job opportunities.

Modus Operandi

  • 1. Victims are lured through part-time job campaigns on social media/messaging platforms, etc., promising high returns in a short span of time. Fraudsters share a link that prompts them to join a chat group to share job details.
  • 2. The victim has to perform tasks such as like and subscribe to social media channels, give fake business reviews, etc., to gain trust and confidence of victims, scammers credit the promised earnings on completion of initial tasks.
  • 3. Scammer then instructs the victim to deposit amount in order to perform additional tasks. The process continues in a loop and once the victim has transferred a large amount, the fraudster stops responding to victim’s calls/messages.

Signs of Job Scam

  • 1. Job description is unprofessional and contains grammatical errors. Also, the job description may look suspicious highlighting keywords like work from home, jobs for free, quick money, unlimited earning potential, part-time jobs etc.
  • 2. Requesting high initial investment i.e., processing/application fee, joining fees, etc.
  • 3. Job promises abnormally high guaranteed income for little work and sounds too good to be true.
  • 4. Company details are missing and may be fake. Words like hiring for big MNC or international company are a red flag.
  • 5. Communication is done through personal email instead of professional email.

Do’s

  • Always remember that a genuine company offering a job will never ask for money.
  • Check the company’s/consultancy agency website, LinkedIn profile and reviews to verify if the company and offered job are legitimate before moving forward.

Don’t

  • Never pay to get a job, genuine firms never ask for deposits.
  • Do not click on any unsolicited link or download any applications sent through SMS, email, or instant messaging applications.
  • Never share sensitive and confidential information like your UPI PIN, Customer ID, Account Number, Debit/Credit Card credentials, OTP, Aadhaar number and PAN with anyone.
