Lifestyle Changes to Manage Your Cholesterol

Cholesterol - a lipophilic molecule is essential for human life. It performs many roles and contributes to the normal functioning of cells. However, too much cholesterol creates concerns. The most effective way to improve cholesterol levels is by visiting your doctor. They can evaluate your symptoms and advise the best treatment plan for you. Nevertheless, you should also follow the below tips at home. It will help you cope up with it in a better way.

 

1. Exercise

Focus on your body and start an exercise program. Pick your favorite workout wear or any suitable clothing and start your regimen. Whether you just go for a 20-minute walk or join a basic yoga session, your body will surely benefit plenty. Moreover, you will get an amazing feeling after you do your exercise. It will make you feel lighter and pleasant throughout the day.

 

2. Follow a Healthy Diet Plan

Based on what foods you eat, when you eat, and how much you eat - the cholesterol level in the body changes throughout the day. However, by following a healthy diet plan you can lower your cholesterol and reduce other risk factors too.

If you want to maintain a healthy body, include the following food items in your diet plan.

  • Grains:  Whole wheat, oats, quinoa, millets, and rice to name a few
  • Fruits:  Fresh fruits like orange, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, banana, etc are a great option
  • Vegetables:  All types of vegetables like spinach, cabbage, beetroot, carrot, asparagus, parsley, broccoli, etc
  • Protein:  Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, beans, legumes, nuts, and tofu
  • Dairy:  Low-fat or toned milk and yogurt
  • Fats:  Healthy fats such as canola oil, peanut oil, soya bean oil and olive oil.  Other food sources of healthy fats include dry fruits, nuts, and seeds

Foods to Avoid:-

  • Stay away from sugary foods like cake, desserts, cookies, candy, sweet pastry, soda, ice cream, etc
  • Eliminate junk food and highly processed food items from your diet plan
  • Avoid fried food items. Instead go for baking, steaming, and grilling options
 

3. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol

As per studies, excessive alcohol and cigarette consumption might cause cardiac damage even before symptoms may appear. Hence, cut down on smoking and drinking as much as possible. It will not only improve your health but will also prevent various other diseases and complications.

 

4. Reduce Stress

Stress and worry can shoot up your cholesterol level instantly. Hence try to chill and relax.

Go for adventure activities, plan a movie night, invite friends over a coffee, read a book, or work on your favorite hobby.  While no one can avoid stress in today’s fast world, you can still work on it and handle it in healthy ways, in order to live a happy and peaceful life.

 

5. Get Enough Sleep

Researchers have found that sleep deprivation can have a negative impact on cholesterol levels. Therefore, try to get enough sleep as much as possible. If you want to initiate sleep, ensure your bedroom is quiet, dark, and cool. Surround yourself with the things that bring a positive vibe. Bring plants or fresh-cut flowers into the room. Replace decorative light fixtures with simple lighting.  Turn off or put away your TV, laptop, mobile, etc so that it doesn’t get in the way of your sleep.

Change your mindset and move towards new habits slowly. It will surely help you lead a healthier and happier life for years to come.
