Credit Card
The ability to use a credit card on UPI — something that was not possible until recently — has transformed how millions of Indians spend and earn rewards. With RuPay credit cards now linkable to major UPI apps like BHIM, PhonePe, and GPay, you can pay merchants and split bills using your credit limit without swiping the card. But UPI transactions on credit cards come with specific limits you need to understand.
Important: Only RuPay credit cards are eligible for UPI linkage — not Visa or Mastercard (as of current NPCI guidelines).
This is what many users miss: when you first link your RuPay credit card to a UPI app, your transaction limit is significantly reduced for the first 24 hours.
Limit during the first 24 hours after linking: Rs. 5,000 per card, per day. This is a security measure to prevent misuse. After 24 hours, standard limits apply.
Practical implication: Do not plan to make large purchases on the day you link your credit card to UPI. Link the card a day before you plan to use it for significant transactions.
While NPCI sets ceiling limits, each issuing bank sets its own sub-limits within those ceilings. Your actual UPI limit may be lower than Rs. 1 lakh if your bank has applied a tighter cap. Some banks may set a daily limit at Rs. 50,000, a per-transaction limit at Rs. 25,000, or a monthly limit on credit-based UPI transactions. Always check with your specific bank via the mobile app (under Card Settings), internet banking portal, or customer care.
UPI payments on credit cards are restricted at certain merchant categories. Per NPCI guidelines, credit card-linked UPI payments for wallet top-ups and certain peer-to-peer (P2P) transfers may be restricted. Merchant payments (P2M — person to merchant) are generally fully supported. If you receive an error for a P2P transaction on your credit card UPI, this is the likely reason.
One of the most attractive benefits: you earn reward points on UPI transactions, just as you would on regular card swipes. This allows faster points accumulation since UPI payments are more frequent than physical swipes. Check your card's reward programme to confirm the earning rate for UPI transactions — some banks offer the full rate, while others may offer a slightly reduced rate.
RuPay credit card UPI integration is one of the most user-friendly financial innovations in India in recent years. Understanding the transaction limits — especially the 24-hour newly linked card cap — ensures smooth, effective usage. AU RuPay credit cards are UPI-enabled, reward-rich, and built for the way modern India pays.
The maximum UPI transaction limit for a RuPay credit card is Rs. 1,00,000 per transaction per day, as set by NPCI. However, individual banks may apply lower sub-limits within this ceiling. For specific merchant categories such as healthcare, education, and insurance, the limit may be extended to Rs. 2,00,000 or more with prior bank approval.
If your RuPay credit card was linked to a UPI app within the last 24 hours, the limit is restricted to Rs. 5,000 per day as a security measure. This limit is automatically lifted after 24 hours, after which your standard daily UPI limit (set by your bank, up to Rs. 1,00,000) applies. If it has been more than 24 hours and your limit is still low, check your card settings in the bank's app or contact customer care.
No. As of the current NPCI guidelines, UPI credit card linkage is only available for RuPay credit cards. Visa and Mastercard credit cards cannot be linked to UPI apps for credit-based transactions. If you want to use a credit card on UPI, you specifically need a RuPay-branded credit card.
Yes, in most cases. When you make a UPI payment using your RuPay credit card, the transaction is processed through your credit card account and reward points are credited as per your card's rewards programme. The earning rate may vary — some cards offer the same rate as physical swipes, while others may have a specific UPI earning rate. Check your card's terms and conditions for the exact reward rate on UPI transactions.
Open Google Pay or PhonePe, go to the payment methods or accounts section, and select Add Credit Card or Add RuPay Card. Enter your 16-digit credit card number, expiry date, and verify via OTP sent to your registered mobile number. Set a UPI PIN for the credit card when prompted. The card will be linked and ready to use after the 24-hour initial restriction period.
NPCI has not set a specific monthly limit on RuPay credit card UPI transactions — only per-transaction and daily limits apply at the NPCI level. However, your bank may impose a monthly cap on credit card UPI transactions within their own systems. Your overall credit card spending limit also serves as a de facto monthly ceiling, since UPI transactions reduce your available credit limit like any other card transaction.
